Murphy weighs about 72 pounds and has never once believed the couch was mine. He is six, a yellow Lab mix we adopted from the county shelter when he was two, and for years he treated the middle cushion of our sofa like a deed he had won in court. He has a Bedsure orthopedic dog bed now, in the corner by the living room window, and most evenings the couch is mine again. Getting there took four years and one bed I should have skipped.
The bed I should have skipped was a flat pillow style thing from a big box store. It looked generous in the aisle. Eight months in, it had packed down to the thickness of a folded towel, and no amount of fluffing brought it back. I washed that cover until the seams went soft, then I threw the whole thing out. When a dog climbs onto a hard couch instead of the bed you bought him, the bed is telling you something.
I bought the Bedsure bed about ten months ago, in the large size, which measures 35 by 25 inches and stands about 7 inches tall. Two things sold me. The cover comes off for washing, and the foam inside is CertiPUR-US certified with the fabric carrying a Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX label. I have washed a great deal of dog bedding in my life. A cover you cannot remove is a cover you will eventually throw away, and I was done buying beds twice a year.
Murphy was cautious for about a day, which is his way with anything new. Then he walked a circle, dropped into the middle of it, and put his chin over the bolster. The bolster is the part that changed things, I think. It gives him something to press against, and a dog who likes to push his back into a couch cushion wants the same feeling from a bed. There are four sides of it and he uses all four.
Ten months, more than twenty trips through the washing machine, and the seam along the bolster still has not opened.
Ten months in, this is still the bed in the corner
The large Bedsure orthopedic bed, the one Murphy has slept on since we retired the flat pillow version. Removable cover, certified foam, four-sided bolster.

The cover has been through the washing machine roughly every two weeks since we bought it, so somewhere north of twenty washes by now. The fabric has faded a little at the top edge where the window light hits it. It has not pilled, and the stitching along the bolster seam has held. In my sewing room, that is the test I actually trust.
I have sewn quilts for thirty years, so I judge seams the way other people judge a haircut. A cover like this fails at the corners first, where the fabric is pulled tight over the foam and the thread takes the strain. I turned this one inside out the third time I washed it and looked. The seams are finished, not just joined, and the corners have a little give in them. That give is why it has lasted.
Murphy is six, and last year he started to stiffen after our long walks. Nothing dramatic. He would get up slower in the evening and take a few steps before he settled. The foam in this bed is firmer than the pillow bed was, and firmness is what a stiff dog wants, something that pushes back a little instead of letting him sink to the floor. He gets up easier in the morning now. I cannot prove the bed did that. I can tell you he stopped sleeping on the couch.
One thing to look at before you buy. The listing calls this a large bed and the dimensions back that up, but the maximum weight recommendation shown on the page is 30 pounds. Murphy is 72 pounds and has used it for ten months without the foam collapsing. I am not telling you to ignore that number. I am telling you it does not match the size of the bed, so measure your dog from chest to rump and decide for yourself.
Two smaller notes. The bed is rectangular, so it wants a wall or a corner, and it takes more floor space than the pillow bed did. If your dog is a serious chewer, this is not the bed for him, because the cover is soft fabric and the foam underneath would not survive a determined set of jaws. And I let the cover air dry on the porch rail, which on a humid Tennessee week takes a day and a half.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table
I would tell you the couch was never really the problem. The couch is just where a dog goes when the floor is uncomfortable. Every bed I bought before this one was an attempt to spend less and get it over with, and I ended up replacing them, so the arithmetic never worked in my favor. If Murphy had taken to the Bedsure bed in the first week and stayed there, that alone would have been enough. What convinced me was the ten months after, when nothing fell apart.
I would also tell you not to buy a dog bed in a hurry. Look at how the cover attaches before you commit, and look at the photos of the inside on the listing. Check whether the foam is certified and whether the fabric has a standard attached to it. And if your dog already chooses the sofa, watch how he lies on it before you shop. Murphy presses his back into the cushion. That told me he wanted a bolster, not another flat pad.
