Murphy came home from the county shelter at two years old and claimed the back seat of my 2019 Subaru Outback before we cleared the driveway. He is six now, seventy-two pounds, yellow Lab mix, and he still believes every squirrel in Knox County owes him money. Those back seats are cloth.

For four years I did what my mother would have done. I laid an old quilt across the seat. It worked for about as long as it took Murphy to turn around twice and paw it into a heap on the floor. Then he sat on the bare seat with his muddy feet, looking at me like the quilt had insulted him personally.

The quilt soaked through, too. He swam at the lake, climbed in wet, and by the time we got home the quilt was damp and so was the seat beneath it. That car smelled like wet dog for a week at a time.

Eighteen months ago I bought the URPOWER dog car seat cover, the hammock style, and I have not taken it out of the car since. Dale asks every few months whether we should fold it up when company comes. Every few months I tell him the company can ride in the front.

Here is what I noticed first about the URPOWER cover, and this is the quilter talking, not the dog owner. The fabric is a 600D Oxford, and the seams run straight and doubled where they take strain. I have unpicked enough cheap quilting to know a skipped stitch when I see one. I did not find one here.

We do the lake trail most Saturdays from April through October, and that is the real test. He comes out of the water, shakes once on the bank, and climbs in. Eighteen months of that, plus two spring sheds, and the cloth seat underneath still looks like the seat I bought.

The URPOWER hammock cover is the only thing I have bought for Murphy that I have never once thought about replacing. Waterproof, nonslip, and it fits a back seat measuring close to 54 inches.

The URPOWER cover is genuinely waterproof. The listing says six layers of fabric, and I believe it, because Murphy has climbed in soaked more times than I can count and the seat underneath has stayed dry. My routine at the end of a muddy week is simple. I lift the cover out, drape it over the fence, and hit it with the hose. It dries in the sun while I drink a cup of coffee on the porch.

The nonslip part surprised me. Murphy is a leaner. He leans into every turn like he is the one driving. With the quilt he slid. With the cover he plants his feet and stays planted, and I have hit the brakes hard on I-40 more than once without him ending up in the footwell.

The fit is the thing to get right. My Outback back seat measures close to the 54 inches the listing tells you to check, and the cover sits across it with a little to spare. It is listed as a universal fit for sedans, SUVs, and compact or mid-size trucks, but universal does not mean it fits every vehicle well. Measure first. That is the one note I would tape to the box.

The hammock shape is the part I did not expect to like. It slings up between the front and back seats, so Murphy has a defined space instead of the run of the whole car. On the eleven minute trip to the vet, where he stress sheds the entire way, that matters. Hair comes off this fabric with a stiff brush rather than the vacuum, so I keep a brush in the door pocket.

Two things annoy me, and I will tell you both. The fabric is not soft. It is a sturdy woven Oxford with a waterproof layer, and it feels like exactly what it is. Murphy does not care. My knees care when I climb back there to buckle something. The second is that a heavy shed season means brushing the cover every couple of weeks. It is a small chore, but it is a chore. It does not smell, though, which sounds like a small thing until you have owned a car accessory that did.

What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table

I would tell you to stop using a quilt. I know why you do it. I did it for four years. But a quilt is a thing you have to manage, and a cover is a thing you forget about, and those are not the same purchase. I would tell you to measure your back seat before you order, because the fit is the whole ballgame and no amount of clever design rescues a cover that is too short. I would tell you the fabric is not plush. If you want plush, buy plush, and then watch what a wet Labrador does to it by the second spring. The six month warranty is on the listing, and I have not needed it, which is the only review of a warranty that means anything. Mostly I would tell you that after eighteen months, with a dog who swims on Saturdays and sheds in April and again in September, the URPOWER cover has done the one job I bought it for. The seat under it is dry and clean. That is the whole reason I am still recommending it.

One less thing to think about before you turn the key

Eighteen months in the back of the Outback and it is still doing its job. If your dog rides in the back seat, this is the version of the purchase I would make again.
